‘Experiences of relationships and participation in communities contribute to children’s belonging, being and becoming. From birth children experience living and learning with others in a range of communities. These might include families, local communities, or early childhood settings.’ (EYLF V2.0 P.38)
This symposium brings together expert speakers who share their insights, knowledge and perspectives about community relationships in early childhood
You will have access to a series of 8 x 20- 30-minute pre-recorded webinars covering different aspects of community relationships.
The pre-recorded webinars will be released on 26 May and can be viewed at a time that suits you up until 16 June.
Each video will have an accompanying Reflection Guide with questions to think about and suggestions for extra resources.
Below are the video topics that are included in the Symposium:
Place-based pedagogy
Presenters – KU Learning and Development Team
Place-based pedagogy creates opportunities to become deeply immersed in experiencing the world around us. In ‘place’ we learn about ourselves, our capacities, and responsibilities.
This video explores the benefits of an inquiry led, place-based pedagogical framework to support children’s emerging identities in context with family, centre, neighbourhoods and community. It will highlight some worthy examples of place-based pedagogy and shifting community perceptions. We will invite you to examine your own community for opportunities to develop place-based relationships and offer sound advice for establishing these practices in your own centre community.

Connections between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and communities and early childhood education services
Presenter: KU Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Team
Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples have the right to be recognised and accepted as experts and leaders in education, influencing the design and delivery of culturally responsive ‘Place-based learning’.
This video will look deeper into educator understandings of cultural integrity and cultural responsibilities, whilst addressing misconceptions and realities of engaging with local peoples and communities. We will explore practices and philosophies that nurture culturally immersive environments and relational connections between Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children, families and communities and early education services, to form the foundations of Place-based and Country-centred pedagogies.
Transition to school
Presenter: Dr Kathryn Hopps
Children’s transition to their first year of school is a major milestone in their lives. Relationships are key to a positive transition. This video explores the importance of a community approach involving the early childhood service, child, family, and school.
