Routines and transitions are an intrinsic part of the day in early childhood settings. They provide predictability and a sense of belonging. When they work well, children will feel ownership and have a positive learning experience. However if not done well, they can be a source of anxiety and stress for children and educators. One of the keys to planning an inclusive and appropriate environment is to understand the way in which routines, rituals and transitions impact on children's wellbeing.
