Catharine Hydon – Early Childhood Consultant

The VEYLDF outlines three interwoven approaches to teaching and learning - Adult-led Learning; Child-directed play and learning; Guided play and learning.  The EYLF speaks to Learning through Play and Intentional Teaching.  This session will explore the concept of an integrated approach to teaching and learning.  What does this mean? Is this what happens in your classroom?

Finding the balance: A Play-framework for play-based learning and intentional teaching in early childhood education                                                                                   1.15pm-3.15pm

Professor Susan Edwards – Director of the Early Childhood Futures, Institute for Learning Sciences & Teacher Education, Australian Catholic University

Play-based learning is a cornerstone of early childhood education provision. Play provides opportunities for children to explore ideas, experiment with materials and express new understandings.  New research points to the role of adult engagement in children’s play to build conceptual knowledge. Often described as ‘intentional teaching’ adult engagement in play can be difficult to reconcile with play-based learning. This session examines the relationship between three types of play using Vygotsky’s ideas about combinatorial thinking, the ZPD and mature concepts.  A new Pedagogical Play-framework is presented that integrates these play-types to reduce the supposed difference between play and intentional teaching.
